If your house is anything like mine—chaotic, loud, and full of kids with wild imaginations—finding a game that keeps everyone engaged (without devolving into arguments) is like striking gold. Enter Fear Stack, the ranking game where you sort ridiculous fears and let your family guess your order. It’s simple, laugh-out-loud funny, and ideal for big families like ours. I had to share this with everyone because it’s already ranking as a 9/10 with my nine-year-old (fitting, right?) and a 9.5/10 with my twelve-year-old!

What Is Fear Stack?

Fear Stack is a card game for adults and kids (it says ages 8+ on the box, but my six-year-old watched and could have easily joined in as well) that comes with 200 cards (184 fear cards and 16 ranking cards), 4 whiteboards, and 4 markers.

The premise? Draw cards with absurd fears like “sitting next to someone at dinner who chews with their mouth open” or “running out of toilet paper” and rank them from most to least scary. Then, your family tries to guess your exact order. It’s part strategy, part mind-reading, and all comedy.

The best part? No complicated rules, just pure fun that reveals how well (or hilariously unwell!) you know each other.

Why It’s a Win for (Big) Families:

  • Quick Setup: Ready to play in minutes—no dice, huge game boards, devices, or apps needed.
  • Inclusive for All Ages: Kids love the silly fears, while adults appreciate the deeper twists of some of the stranger ones.
  • Endless Replayability: With 184 fear cards, every game feels fresh as you never know what cards you’ll get!
  • Affordable Fun: At just $14.99, it’s a steal for hours of entertainment.

I can already picture the chaos in a big family like mine: Littler ones ranking “calling my teacher mom” as top fear, while teens go for “social media blackout.” The guesses? Priceless. It’s one of those games that sparks stories and inside jokes that last way beyond game night.

How We Played It (And Why You Should Too)

I played the game with my nine-year-old first. We opened the box together and took out the cards and game boards.

Within a few minutes, we had read the directions and were playing. He got the hang of it almost immediately and laughed along with one of his first fears (forgetting what to say as soon as it’s your turn to say it). He busted out laughing and retold a story from school of a time this happened to him.

His laughter brought two more kids to the room to watch (after some initial complaints about not getting to play). They soon joined in the storytelling of their own experiences with the fears on the cards! They laughed and carried on as we finished our game and begged me to play it with them all tomorrow. #FamilyGameNight it is!

Pros

  • Builds empathy and communication in a fun way.
  • Portable for family outings.
  • Great conversation starter for you and your kids.

Cons

  • Might get rowdy with competitive families (but that’s half the fun!).
  • No expansion packs, but the base game is already solid with 184 fear cards.

Bottom Line

Verdict: 9.25/10 (averaging out the two scores my kids gave it, and I’d agree wholeheartedly that this game measures up to that score!)

If you’re looking to level up your family game collection, Fear Stack is a must-try. It’s perfect for holidays, birthdays, or just beating random weeknight boredom.

  1. Oh this sounds like a blast! My weirdest fear would have to be dolls….I’ve had it ever since I was a kid, I find them incredible creepy. But my husband would love this game. When did you start introducing game nights with your family?

    1. We start the littles out with easy games probably around 3 or 4. Candy Land is one of their all-time favorites as it’s super simple and easy to play, and we added Bluey Candy Land not too long ago because they’re all obsessed with Bluey! We work them up to harder games as they get older. I’ll probably post some other games we like to play together soon, so be on the lookout for that!

    2. The doll thing is 100% legit! Dolls are so creepy! If you ever want to watch a super creepy Pixar short, look up “Alma.” Or maybe don’t if you value your sleep! It’ll freak you out so much!
