Our family’s first big trip, a trip to Dallas on the Amtrak Texas Eagle to close out 2024! We didn’t ring in the new year there, but it was an amazing way to close out an amazing year.
Only my wife had ever been on an Amtrak train before, so she was the only one who knew what to expect.
She was apprehensive about how the kids would fare. I can’t lie; I was as well. It wasn’t an overwhelming anxiety, but it was definitely there. Something about our first big trip (big to us, anyway) with all five kids. We’d taken short trips by car before, two hours at the most here and there, but never anything this long or by train. We were nervous to say the least.
There’s only one word that comes to my mind as I have now had time to reflect on our first train trip: wow.

As soon as our train pulled up to the station platform, I knew we had made the right choice.
I’ll have a full, more detailed train trip report soon enough. I want to touch on the highs and lows and tips of traveling via train with a big family. I know it’s something I wish I would’ve been able to read before we went.
For now, all I can say is this: if you never travelled by train, you should. It’s insanely fun.
More to come…. Stay tuned.
Until then….
