Twenty-Four: The Backyard Swimming Pool

Our backyard swimming pool is the heart of our summer chaos, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s a modest ten-foot pool, nothing fancy, but it’s ours, and it (somehow) fits our whole big family, kids, parents, and toys. The kids go wild for it, splashing and shrieking with joy the moment they jump in. I realized something today that made me stop and smile. It’s not about the size of the pool; it’s about the memories we’re building, one whirlpool at a time.

There’s also a bit of “dad science” to explain why the kids can’t get enough of the pool: swimming triggers the release of endorphins, those natural “feel-good” hormones in the brain that lift your mood and ease stress. Studies show (linked here is the study if you want to geek out a bit like I did and read it) that the rhythmic strokes and water’s calming effect create a sense of euphoria, somewhat of a “swimmer’s high.” That’s why our kids can paddle around for hours, inventing games, laughing nonstop, tirelessly creating whirlpool after whirlpool, their energy fueled by pure joy. The pool is their happy place, where every splash feels like freedom.

#NotOurPool but a dad can dream, can’t he?

We may not have a sprawling estate or an Olympic-sized pool, but this little circle of water is more than enough for us. It’s where our kids bond, burn off energy, and just be kids. And for us parents, watching them light up with every splash is worth every penny spent on chlorine.
